Bamboo plays a critical role in Meghalaya’s rural economy, livelihoods, and ecological resilience. With growing demand from industries such as construction, handicrafts, biochar, furniture, and green energy, there is an urgent need to strengthen sustainable bamboo resource management in the state. The Meghalaya State Bamboo Mission (MSBM) under MBMA is planning to implement multiple initiatives that integrate bamboo into agroforestry systems, promote sustainable harvest and utilization, and enable community-driven enterprises. However, the long-term success of these initiatives depends on robust technical guidance, inter-departmental convergence, and knowledge exchange among practitioners, researchers, and communities.

The two-day workshop aims to bring together stakeholders to:

  1. Exchange best practices on bamboo agroforestry systems, sustainable bamboo harvest, clump management, and resource utilization.
  2. Identify convergence opportunities across departments and missions.
  3. Highlight community-based bamboo industry models for livelihood generation and circular economy development.
  4. Prepare a state-level action plan for strengthening bamboo-based value chains and sustainable management practices.
  5. Include bamboo in the climate resilience and disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies.
